The Injured Lion
By: Julian Lu
He looks at me through large, curious eyes,
I don’t know what to look for in his glance,
He tries to bite, I try to compromise,
Or force him out of his menacing stance,
His teeth are jagged from years spent alone,
His nostrils flared, in an uncanny way,
His ears are pointed to lead him back home,
I don’t know, is there something I should say?
His mane is ruffled, from fighting his foes,
A stream of blood is oozing from his lips,
Looking at me, I can’t tell if he knows,
That a bullet wound is lodged in his hip,
I make my way back to the way I came,
Wondering if this lion is insane
